Eye Exercises  ⁄  How to create fusion in divergence (parallel-viewing)?

Dynamic divergence exercise is usually difficult for myopic persons while they haven’t proper visual skill for distant vision. I hope the next transitional exercise I wrote will help you.

Open Microsoft Word, set large font size 72pt and type several eight-pointed stars (06DE+Alt+X). Print the file and cut out the stars. Glue a pair of stars to the window glass at your eye’s level. The distance between the centers of stars should be equal to your pupillary distance (PD). Stand at the distance of twice arm’s length (one meter approximately). Use glasses that are two-diopters lower than your current values of myopia.

First look at the window and watch two stars. Count up in your mind: one-and-two-and-three-and-four-and. It’s better to use a metronome. The online metronome link. Set up the metronome at 120 beats per minute. Now count rhythmically with the beats: one (beat) – and (beat) – two (beat) – and (beat) – three (beat) – and (beat) – four (beat) – and (beat). Look at the eight-pointed stars by turns, two beats (one-and) watch the left star and next two beats (two-and) watch the right star, then two beats (three-and) watch the left star and next two beats (four-and) watch the right star. Thus you need four seconds total time for the vision at the distance of one meter.

Then keep your line of vision between the stars and look through the window glass into the distance. You’ll see four stars. Merge a pair of middle stars into one. So you should see three stars. Watch the merged (middle) star and count again: one (beat) – and (beat) – two (beat) – and (beat) – three (beat) -and (beat) – four (beat) – and (beat). So you need four seconds total time for distant vision. Next look at the window again (four seconds), then look through the window into the distance (four seconds) and repeat the action again, etc.

Remember: you should practice the extraocular muscle warmup or the advanced extraocular muscle warmup before the divergence exercise. Optimal set length for the dynamic divergence exercise is from one to three minutes. Then take a short rest and resume the exercise. Also you should practice the relaxation massages (part 1 and part 2) after the exercises for deep rest. Continue dynamic divergence exercise until you get tired. Total workout time is not more than 30 minutes.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Feel free to contact me.

While doing the convergence and divergence exercises, I realized that it is very important to also do the advanced extraocular warmup and the muscle relaxation massage. Following the exercise, the massage relaxes the muscles and allows greater improvement for the divergence and convergence exercises. When initially doing the massage, I felt a good deal of tightness and soreness, but this later changed to a feeling of relaxed and stronger-feeling facial muscles.

Steve, you are absolutely right. All the time I tried to explain this idea to my patients. The dynamic eye exercises can be considered as a sports training. Warmup and relaxation massage are vital parts of that.

what should be the distance kept for -3.5D,for one who does with no glasses?
    is it 80cm ?

  4. Doc:

    07.04.2012 at 14:33 #

sam, the distance is 40cm. It’s the distance of clear vision for myopia -2.5D. Also it’s the distance of half-diopter under-corrected vision for myopia -3.0D and of one-diopter under-corrected vision for myopia -3.5D.

but the font size you mentioned here is larger (72pt) than mentioned in the dynamic divergence (there it is 26pt).

sam, you’re right. I misunderstood you. The size of eight-pointed star is from the thumb nail size to the half of thumb nail size at arm’s length. At the distance of 1 meter you should use font size from 72pt to 48pt. At the distance of 50cm and 40cm the font size is about 26pt. At the distance of 1 meter you need glasses -1.5D if you have myopia -3.5D. Of course you could try the dynamic divergence exercise at 1 meter or 0.8m with no glasses, but good result is not guaranteed because you can’t do quality fusion. Thus, while the myopia is -3.5D, for eye exercise with no glasses the distance of 40cm and font 26pt is necessary. Or -1.5D glasses at 1 meter and font 48/72pt.

    Hello Doc,

I have a pretty high myopia (-7 diopters in both eyes) and im 20 years old. Just wondering if I need to take any precautions when going to the gym. Is it harmful to my eyes if I lift heavy weights ? Can any type of exercise / gym in general be harmful for my eyes ? Please let me know. Thanks

Jon – “is it harmful to my eyes if I lift heavy weights?” – Yes.
“Can any type of exercise in general be harmful for my eyes?” – Boxing, arm wrestling, judo, etc.

    Hi doctor,

I would like to share my experience, I was doing this excercise since couple of month,, during the initial stage I was doing the exercise very much regularly, but off late I do only 10 minutes daily. Now I observed that I get tearse very often. When I focus on an object with my eye wide open, I see the object blurry at first, then a pain comes for ffraction of second, then the object becomes clear. (without glass). I could feel that eye movement starts moving on its own and try to see image clearly for more second or rather I would say it started with second and now moved to minute.

Now a days , when I do divergent and convergent @ 50 cm with out glass, the image is getting clear on the third or fourth count.

I notice that -3 indoor glass becoming clear, as my started learning to make eye movements. Whereas -5 dioptre glass is too zoomed when I wear it and could not able to wear for a longer period. My actual power was -6 on both the eyes, when I wore to read the small letter on the computer, the small letters are blurry, where this was not the case when I wore it couple of month before.

Now I learnt the Arjuna aim, when I implement on the object, I feel the blurry vision is getting rectified, but I could not do it on the dot.

Hope in couple of month I would get rid of myopia.

My son 12 yrs old is having myopia only on the right eye -0.50 and left eye is normal. I was wondering how it happened on one eye. Does your exercise will help to rectify his myopia.

    Hello doc,

I just wanted to follow up on my previous question. Can you provide me some insight as to how exactly lifting weights (20-30 pounds) harm the eyes ? I usually hear that exercise is good for body etc. Is it related to the eye pressure ? Does lifting weights increase the IOP ? As always, thanks for your answers.

    Best Regards,

Ramapriya – about your son – it’s probably a case of left-eye dominant vision. If both eyes are of equal dominance, the visual acuity is equalize too in both eyes.

Jon – high myopia + lifting weights = high risk of retinal detachment.

    Hey Doc,

Thanks for your precise answer. Im not sure if you can answer this but are there any exercises that I can do to keep my body healthy and at the same time not hurt my eyes. I mean am I restricted from all types of gym exercise ? How about manual exercises like push ups and sit ups that dont include any lifting ? Would they be okay for the eyes ? Thanks for your valuable insight.

    Best Regards,

Jon – the best eye-and-body exercises are tennis, table tennis, badminton, frisbee, while you follow the ball (shuttlecock, disk) with your eyes. I.e. playing sports game, keep your eyes on the ball.

I have a problem with determining when I am using divergence and when, convergence. My eyes feel relaxed when I do your divergence exercises. When I look at your 8-pointed stars, the object in the middle is much closer than the objects on either side. I feel I could reach out and touch it mid-air. Is that divergence or convergence?

  17. Doc:

    16.02.2013 at 23:32 #

Cheri, if the object in the middle is much closer than the objects on either side and you feel you could reach out and touch it mid-air it’s a convergence. Also you can feel a tension of medial rectus muscles near your nose bridge.

Doc, at what distance should i stand and what font should i use if i don’t wear under-corrected glasses? My myopia is about -0.5
I noticed that when i’m doing the dynamic divergence exercise i can only do a fusion in divergence if the stars are at 60 mm PD (mine is about 68 or so) and i’m standing in front of the glass. (the paper i’m using is A4; distance betwen eyes and symbols is 50 cm with no glasses… and i can barely do that fusion, of course, in divergence, cause convergence is piece of cake).

  22. Doc:

    21.09.2014 at 23:06 #
