    Subject: Commentary on the TABLE of refractive values.

    The intention is excellent. But when an OD makes a measurement he believes in prescribing the strongest minus possible.
    The result of this prescription philosophy, is over-prescription by one, two and sometimes three diopters. You never know – until you personally check.

    This is why I suggest you do your own independent checking using this FREE Snellen chart – with a bright light on it. See:

    The LEGAL STANDARD for driving a car, is 20/40 in the better eye – or with both eyes open. If you do the exercise suggested by the Doc on this site, then, in my opinion, you should do your own objective testing. I write in big letters each line – so I can tell, at 20 feet – which line I read 1/2 the letters correctly.

    Getting rid of that minus lens (assuming you confirm 20/40) is the first big step towards getting to 20/20.

    I truly appreciate the “open” nature of these discussions and thank the Doc for his time.

    Let me add that we indeed are controlling our vision with our “computer brain”. It in fact our visual habits that alter our refractive state – in our normal eyes. But here is the idealization of that behavior. This effect is shown for a minus lens – but EXACTLY the same thing always happens when we put our nose near the books – for long hours, and yes long YEARS. Then we EXPECT to have no effect. We are kidding ourselves about this scientific truth. This finally convinces me of this tragic truth:

    In science – it often helps to “see things differently”, or to form a “new perspective”. This could be the start of an honest preventive program, if we could ever learn to take these facts seriously.

    I’m a german man of 26 years suffering from strong myopia. But – slowly but surely – I’m on my way to recover with “vision training” (especially Bates).

    Only perfect practice makes perfect vision.

    I agree 100% with you, you can’t understand it for me. As a matter of fact, I’m quite advanced when it comes to vision training, but as I said – my problem is surely a little bit more complex and more personal.     Hello Doc.

    I appreciate this NUIA eyecharm link, the device seems amazing, especially to programmers who can code applicatoin with more creativity! However what startles me is the lack of safety explaination. This device uses infra red radiation to detect eye movements. No claim, no statements on the quantity of these radiations emitted (IR are harmfull to the eyes depending on the quantity emitted and duration), on people who should avoid using them (having retina damages and such..) ?

    Alex, infrared illumination is a routine practice in eye tracking. Every night vision web camera has IR LED. By the way, I am using the Genius iSlim 321R night vision web cam with ITU gaze tracker, the free open-source software for eye tracking.     I am on the way to get clear vision using your excercise. I am pleased that I have made some improvement in my vison. Please find detail below.

    first reading is reasult of eye test before starting excercises. second reading is yeasterday’s eye test result.

    You can clearly see that my SPH number decreased but my CYL number is increased. Earlier i was not having CYL number.

    Is it normal behaviour to increase CYL number during excercise??
    What is the reason for CYL number?

    Ashvin, the reason for cylinder’s number is an unequal corneal refraction. I mean, now your pair of horizontal extraocular muscles (i.e. medial rectus m. and lateral rectus m.) is stronger than the pair of vertical extraocular muscles (i.e. superior rectus m. and inferior rectus m.). You need to add an effort of vertical extra muscles. You should do more up and down eye movements during the warm-up. Also the dynamic fixation trainer 2 helps you to strengthen the vertical eye muscles.

    Ashvin, a bit more information: before the eye training your myopia was -1.75 D both in horizontal and vertical meridians. Now your myopia is -0.75 D in horizontal meridian and -1.50 D in vertical meridian. In any case, now your uncorrected vision is better than before in particular as for vertical lines.

    thanks for more info.. yes i have improved vision. I do not wear minus glasses except for driving. I wear plus glasses for computer work and exercise.

    Hi I can’t go past such coincidence: By wearing plus glasses, Ashvin surely means glasses for correcting hypermetropia doesn’t he? Lately I was wondering about doing such thing ( I too have a remaining myopia) : could it be useful to wear plus glasses for close work for someone with myopia? Because plus glasses would shift the focal point right before the retina, perhaps it would help reshaping the eyeball correctly on the long run?

    Alex, yes we use plus glasses to correct hypermetropia both for far and close distances. Also the plus glasses are useful for close distance for myopia to decrease the effort of accommodation (by shifting the focal point right before the retina, as you wrote) and to restore the visual acuity. On the contrary, wearing the minus glasses at close distance cause the progressing of myopia for someone with myopia.

    My 2 1/2 old daughter has myopia and using glasses more than two months(-8). Can you help me/advise what i can do for her better eyesight without glasses. If i can choose some exercise for her and you know its very difficult to make her awareness of the importance of eye or even the exercise but i wish to get some advises and exercise if it works for her. I hope you will help me

    Hello Doc,

    Since I was a little boy 7-8 years old I developed a small Myopia of -1.00, but I broke my glasses when I was 10 years old. Then my parents bought me fake glasses for 2-3 $ and I was seeing pretty clearly with them, but after 2-3 months when I went to the hospital I learned that I had -3.00. I was shocked and threw away the fake glasses and bought real ones. My right eye was -2.75 and my left one was -3.00. I am 16 years old now and am seeing that my eyes are getting worse. And I have some questions:
    Can my sight be fixed?
    Can you suggest me a daily exercise schedule?
    What should be my limit for staying infront of the computer?
    Do carrots fix eyesight at all?

    A few days ago I found your website and am going through it. Over the past few months I have tried to limit my use of eyeglasses.

    My earlier prescription
    Rt Eye
    SPH -4.0 CYL -0.5 Axis 165deg
    Lt eye
    SPH -3.75 CYL -0.5 Axis 145deg

    This had been the same for the past 10-12 years.

    Today I got my eyes checked again and the prescription is
    Rt Eye
    SPH -3.5 CYL -1.0 Axis 180
    Lt Eye
    SPH -3.5 CYL -0.5 Axis 170

    My question is why did cylindrical and axis change and what does it indicate? spherical number reduced but cylindrical has increased. Does it indicate worsening or improvement?

    Another question is I spend around 6-7 hours daily on the laptop working. Should I wear -0.5 prescription glasses while working on the laptop. Also what strength to wear while driving.

    Will be glad if you could guide me on this.

    Thank you for replying back.

    I am going through your site but am not able to follow a sequence. Can you let me know of a particular routine to follow. There are some exercises on the site where you have asked to adjust the PD, do I need software for that?

    Am I doing anything wrong since cylindrical number and axis have increased or does this happen often

    I find my vision much better during the daytime but at nighttime it is not so good and I sometimes wear my prescription glasses especially if I am outside. Is that okay or should I avoid wearing prescription glasses altogether.

    I am going through your site again and again and as you said somewhere on the site the parts are slowly becoming clearer and I am able to understand things which I was not able to during the first few times.

    I am trying to do the warm up in the morning the first thing after awakening. I am not able to feel much when I do the downward movement. Hopefully with time I will be able to. You asked to do more up and down movements. Say during warmup exercises instead of one time upward movement I do that three-four times and same for downward. total count 100.

    Is this routine okay for the start. Any more exercises to add?

    Warmup again at the time of eye exercise,dynamic divergence, and relaxation. Total time 30 minutes.
    I should use -0.5 while doing the eye exercises

    I find it much easier to do the convergence than the divergence.

    One peculiar thing I noted is during the noon time if I look up at the sky at the bright clouds I end up sneezing once or twice and vision becomes a bit clearer for an instant. At those times I am usually not wearing any glasses.

    Should I be wearing reduced prescription glasses for distance vision. Currently I use my prescription glasses if I require to do any distance work that requires focus otherwise I an not wearing any glasses throughout the day. Is this okay?

    Akansha, add advanced warm-up exercises with breathing for better control. You are right, it much easier to do the convergence than the divergence, but divergence is more profitable.

    “… vision becomes a bit clearer for an instant. At those times I am usually not wearing any glasses…” that phenomenon is called the flashes of clear vision or the clear flashes.

    me too as Ashvin have developed diplopia-astigmatism while not having before while having reduced my diopters a lot.

    I’d like to ask if see the darkest line in the astigmatic wheel about 30 degrees (counterclockwise) from the horizontal line with me left eye and about the symmetrical with my right, do I also “need to add an effort of vertical extra muscles. You should do more up and down eye movements during the warm-up. Also the dynamic fixation trainer 2 helps you to strengthen the vertical eye muscles”?
